How to Free Up Space on Your Mac
Step-by-step guide to reclaiming storage on your Mac using built-in tools and Space Dust Scanner.
Step 1: Check What is Using Space
Open System Settings > General > Storage. This gives you a high-level breakdown of what is consuming your disk. Categories include Applications, Documents, System Data, and more.
Step 2: Empty the Trash
Right-click the Trash icon in your Dock and select "Empty Trash." You would be surprised how much space forgotten files in the Trash can consume.
Step 3: Clear Downloads
Open Finder, go to Downloads, sort by size, and delete files you no longer need. Installer DMGs and ZIP files are common space wasters.
Step 4: Find Large Files
In Finder, use File > Find (Cmd+F), change "Kind" to "Other > File Size", set "is greater than" to 500 MB. This reveals large files you may have forgotten about.
Step 5: Use Space Dust Scanner (Free)
For a more thorough analysis, download Space Dust Scanner - it is completely free with no ads or tracking. Scanner checks:
- Cache files from 100+ applications
- Large files (100 MB+) across your home directory
- Orphaned app data left behind by deleted apps
- Developer build artifacts (node_modules, DerivedData, etc.)
- Startup items running at login
Scanner shows you exactly what is taking space without deleting anything. It is read-only and safe to run.
Step 6: Clean What You Find
Based on what Scanner reveals, you can manually delete files through Finder, or use Space Dust Cleaner for one-click cleanup with a 24-hour undo safety net.
Step 7: Prevent Future Buildup
- Empty Trash regularly
- Delete installer files after using them
- Clear browser caches monthly
- Remove apps you no longer use (including their leftover data)
- Run Space Dust Scanner periodically to catch new buildup
